FFP1 vs FFP2 vs FFP3: What Do They Mean?

FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 are classes of filtering facepiece respirators designed to help reduce exposure to airborne particles. The class is only one part of choosing respiratory protection: the task, contaminant, concentration, exposure time, fit and manufacturer's instructions all matter.

FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 at a glance

Rule of thumb: particles versus gases and vapours

As a simple starting point, FFP1 is generally associated with lower-level particulate hazards, FFP2 with dusts, mists and some fumes at a higher protection class, and FFP3 with higher-risk particulate hazards. These are only general categories, not a final selection rule.

Standard FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 particulate masks do not protect against gases or organic vapours. An FFP3 mask can filter suitable solid and liquid particles such as dust, mist, smoke and some biological aerosols, but gaseous molecules and vapours can pass through ordinary particulate filter media.

Why an FFP3 particulate mask will not stop vapours

Particulate respirators do not contain the activated carbon or other chemical sorbents needed to capture or neutralise gases and vapours. This means an FFP3 mask should not be treated as protection against solvent or paint vapours, thinners, varnishes, adhesives, polyurethane or other chemical vapours. It also should not be assumed to protect against gaseous pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide or ozone.

Where gases or vapours are present, the correct protection may involve a half-mask or full-face respirator with a cartridge selected for the specific substance, sometimes combined with a particulate filter. For example, an A2P3 combination may be suitable for some organic vapours and particulates, but it is not a universal solution. The filter type, concentration, exposure time and change schedule must be selected by a competent person using current product and workplace information.

Ventilation, local exhaust extraction and other controls should be prioritised before relying on respiratory PPE alone.

What do FFP respirators protect against?

FFP respirators are primarily intended for particulate hazards. Depending on the product and certification, this can include dusts, mists and fumes. A standard particulate respirator should not be assumed to protect against gases or vapours. Those hazards may require a different filter type, a combined respirator or another control altogether.

Always identify the substance and check the product's user instructions, marking and technical data. A higher FFP class does not make an unsuitable respirator suitable for a different contaminant.

How do I choose between FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3?

  1. Identify the hazard. Establish whether the airborne substance is a dust, mist, fume, gas, vapour, biological agent or a combination of hazards.
  2. Assess the exposure. Consider the concentration, duration, task, ventilation and whether the substance has a workplace exposure limit.
  3. Choose the right type of RPE. The mask class, filter type, facepiece design and assigned protection information must suit the assessed risk.
  4. Check the fit. A respirator only works as intended when it seals correctly to the face. Facial hair, glasses, movement and other PPE can affect the seal.
  5. Follow the instructions. Check how the product should be worn, stored, replaced and disposed of, and whether it is marked for single or repeated use.

What does the FFP rating not tell you?

The FFP class does not by itself tell you whether the respirator is suitable for every concentration of a substance, how long it can be worn, or whether it will work with other PPE. It also does not remove the need for training, fit checking or a wider workplace risk assessment.

Fit and facial hair

Any gap between the face and the respirator can reduce protection. Facial hair in the sealing area is a particular concern, and glasses, helmets, eye protection and other equipment may also affect the fit. Where tight-fitting RPE is required, follow the applicable workplace fit-testing arrangements and product instructions.

What do R, NR and D mean?

Some FFP markings include extra letters. These markings relate to how the product was tested or intended to be used, so check the manufacturer's explanation for the exact model. Do not assume that a mask is reusable simply because it looks clean or comfortable after use.
