EN ISO 13688 is a general standard for protective clothing. It covers basic requirements such as ergonomics, harmlessness, sizing, ageing, compatibility and information supplied with the garment.
It is usually used alongside a more specific standard that describes the hazard protection. For example, hi-vis clothing may be certified to EN ISO 20471, while EN ISO 13688 appears in the supporting certification because it covers the garment’s general protective-clothing requirements.
This guide explains what the standard does and does not tell you when you read a protective clothing label or technical datasheet.
What EN ISO 13688 does
EN ISO 13688 provides general requirements for protective clothing. These can include:
- Ergonomic design and suitability for the wearer
- Basic sizing and fit information
- Materials and components that should not create avoidable harm during normal use
- Garment construction and general performance requirements
- Ageing, cleaning, maintenance and information supplied with the garment
- Compatibility with the way the garment is intended to be used
The standard helps make protective clothing usable and suitable, but it does not by itself tell you what hazard the garment protects against.
What EN ISO 13688 does not tell you
EN ISO 13688 is not a standalone protection class. It does not tell you that a garment is high-visibility, waterproof, chemical-resistant, antistatic, heat-resistant or suitable for a particular biological hazard.
Look for the task-specific standard and its class or performance marking. Examples include:

The exact standard, class and garment design must match the task. A garment listing EN ISO 13688 alone is not evidence that it provides any particular hazard protection.
How to read a protective clothing label
When checking a garment or its datasheet, look for the complete set of information rather than one isolated logo or standard number.
1. Product and manufacturer reference
Record the manufacturer, product name or reference, colour and model. The reference helps you find the correct declaration, user instructions and replacement garment.
2. Size and fit information
Check the size marking and the manufacturer’s size chart. Protective clothing must allow the wearer to work safely without excessive restriction, gaps or loose material. Some garments may be designed to fit over other PPE or workwear.
3. Specific protection pictograms and standards
Look for the pictogram, standard number, class and any performance level that describes the hazard protection. A hi-vis garment should show its EN ISO 20471 information; EN ISO 13688 is the general protective-clothing standard behind it, not the visibility class.
4. Care and maintenance instructions
Follow the label and user instructions for washing, drying, storage, repairs and inspection. Incorrect washing, contamination, heat or unauthorised alterations can reduce protective performance.
5. Conformity and supporting documents
Check the conformity marking and the manufacturer’s declaration or certification information for the market where the garment is being supplied. The product label alone may not show every applicable standard or limitation, so consult the technical datasheet and user instructions.
Example: TSW14 hi-vis hooded sweatshirt
The Traega TSW14 technical datasheet is a useful example of ordinary hi-vis workwear carrying both general and specific standards. It lists EN ISO 13688:2013 alongside EN ISO 20471:2013 Class 3.
The datasheet describes a Class 3 zip-front hooded sweatshirt with two 6 cm waist bands and shoulder braces. The orange version is also tested to RIS-3279-TOM for specified railway environments, while the yellow version is not automatically covered by that orange-only railway requirement.
This shows the difference clearly: EN ISO 13688 relates to general protective-clothing requirements, EN ISO 20471 gives the hi-vis performance class and RIS-3279-TOM is an additional application-specific railway requirement.
Example: specialist Vanguard hood
The VANGUARD G4 H20 headtop with breathing tube is a more specialist example. Its product information lists EN ISO 13688 alongside standards for powered respiratory protection, eye and face protection, chemical protection, dry particles, infective agents, radioactive contamination and electrostatic properties.
The long list does not mean that every part of the hood provides every type of protection in every configuration. The complete Vanguard G4 PAPR system, compatible components, operating instructions and intended use must all be checked.
Care, alterations and replacement
- Wear the garment as instructed and fasten closures when the certification requires it.
- Follow the specified washing and drying process.
- Inspect for fading, damage, contamination, loose seams and loss of reflective or protective material.
- Do not cut, shorten, sew, iron or modify protective clothing without manufacturer approval.
- Replace the garment when its protective performance no longer applies or it cannot be cleaned effectively.
- Keep the technical datasheet and user instructions with the product information where practical.

Common label-reading mistakes
- Assuming EN ISO 13688 is a protection class.
- Assuming a garment is suitable because it has a CE, UKCA or other conformity mark without checking the specific standards.
- Confusing the garment’s colour with certified high visibility.
- Covering or altering certified material with logos, harnesses, jackets or equipment.
- Assuming a standard listed on one component applies to an entire PPE system.
